HOW DO PLANES FLY
RESEARCH
How planes fly is something that has always confused me, so I made sure to spend time researching. I am a visual learner, so watching youtube videos with diagrams explaining the concepts was helpful for me.
Here are some of the ones I found most helpful:

Concept in most basic form:
- Wings are moveable parts
- Tails are moveable parts
- The movement of the wings and tails create an airfoil shape
- Airfoil produces lift force
- Downwash is created in response to the production of airfoil, combating the airlift
- Airplanes have two airfoils; slats and flaps
- Takeoff = increase in airlift, flaps move to produce this, resulting in airflow forces to lift plane
- Turbofan engines use more fuel, creating more thrust
- When thrust force is greater than the drag, a plane will fly faster
- Landing = flaps move into position to decrease drag
- In landing procedure the planes spoiler is activated
- Reverse drag engines are switched on to decrease speed when landing

IDEA GENERATION
Initially I wanted to focus on the difference between planes in the past in comparison to modern models.
Museum Design:
- focus on 1900 Wright Brothers
- 40-50s was the rise of commercial flights
- include 1950s ads/signage
- make model of museum set up ?
- create logos / exhibit marketing material
- create exhibits to be presented in museum
- interactive aspects ?
- section different areas into different time periods
- how to show moving parts ? importance of flaps/slats ?
However, this ideas focuses too closely on the history of planes, when I should be focusing on the science behind how they work.
Lots of diagrams of planes are boring, with lots of arrows confusing the viewer. I wanted to create a poster communicating the details of how planes fly, whilst still remaining visually pleasing and communicative.
Poster:
- Drawings of planes
- Blueprint style ?
- Include annotations of planes features
- Similar style to illustrated recipes ?
