Project 3: Drawing and Visualising

Thumbnail Sketches:
Picture
For this project I was asked to create a poster for a play, focussing on designing lots of different variations, in theme, colour, composition, style etc. I began by selecting from the list which one I wanted to use, and after quickly reading the synopsis of each play online, I decided on Hedda Gabler.
I hadn't heard of Hedda Gabler before, so began by reading some analysis of the themes and hidden meanings of the play. I feel I work a lot better when I have all my notes written down rather than sketched out, so began by noting down some ideas I felt could be incorporated into my thumbnails whilst reading these reviews and articles.
I also found some video essays on YouTube which were helpful, as well as a performance of the play which I skimmed through to look for any other references.
One thing I thought stood out a lot was how Hedda felt powerless within society, now residing as a housewife and not being happy with her husband, and how this led to her going mad with power when she managed to claim any form of it- resulting in her loss of power when things got too intense, leading to the murder of a friend, and the death of herself at her own hands.

I then began sketching down some of these ideas, making sure to include dark themes within these thumbnail sketches, as that is a large part of the play.
I included many objects referenced in the play; her fathers gun, a piano, fire, a manuscript, painting of her father, as well as including themes of Hedda being in control, with her holding a gun, being a puppet (and/or the puppeteer), starting fires.

Overall I'm happy with how my 3 final poster ideas turned out, I think it would have been interesting to see what these could have looked like if I drew them digitally instead of using gouache and acrylic. I think the fiery affect in all 3 designs would be executed a lot better, and I would be able to play with shadows a lot more, making each design more atmospheric and eerie.
One aspect I like is my use of fonts, I managed to hand draw my own fonts without them looking like "hand-writing", and I think the fonts I chose fit the period in which Hedda Gabler is set. This being said, I think the first design's font could be a lot better, I Initially wanted the title to almost feel like smoke form the fire, but once again it was rather hard to execute by hand, and I think it would've been achieved easier using photoshop.
